Immune Activation and Inflammatory Biomarkers (suPAR)

The session titled “Immune Activation and Inflammatory Biomarkers (suPAR)” focused on how immune system activity and inflammation can be measured to assess health risks and guide preventive medicine. Eugen-Olsen explored immune activation and inflammatory biomarkers, highlighting suPAR as a strong indicator of systemic inflammation and biological risk.

The lecture examined how suPAR can enable earlier risk stratification, personalised prevention, and improved clinical decision-making within longevity and preventive healthcare.

Jesper Eugen-Olsen, PhD, is a Danish biochemist, inventor, and life-science entrepreneur who serves as Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of ViroGates, a medtech company dedicated to improving patient outcomes through innovative prognostic biomarkers. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Copenhagen and brings more than 30 years of research experience, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications and multiple patents. In addition to his corporate leadership, he acts as an independent expert and evaluator for EU-funded projects and previously served as Director of Laboratory Research at Copenhagen University Hospital.

Eugen-Olsen is widely recognized for discovering the clinical utility of the biomarker suPAR, originally identified in HIV research and now validated in hundreds of studies as a prognostic marker across multiple diseases. His work focuses on inflammation, immune activation, and disease prognosis, supporting clinicians in identifying patient risk and improving care pathways. He is a senior scientist at the University of Copenhagen and a principal investigator at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre, and he is also a patent inventor on technologies including suPAR and IP-10. As a shareholder in ViroGates, he contributes to the commercialization of the suPARnostic® diagnostic product line.
